The golden age of a department is the time of transformation by a giant who is at the same time the most creative scholar and the most able builder, and cared enough to serve for many years as the chairman. Richard Herman Wilhelm is among a select group who have forever elevated the status of the department, and advanced the frontier of a chosen area of research and teaching. We stand on his shoulders, and are grateful that we can see very far.
