Balancing Structure, Partners, and Goals to Achieve Strategic Fit in Collaborative Product and Process Development

Irene J. Petrick, Information Sciences and Technology, Penn State University, 332 Information Sciences and Technology Building, University Park, PA 16802 - 6823

Strategic fit implies a convergence of the right set of partners, organized in the right structure, with the right goals to achieve the desired product and/or process developments that actually yield lasting economic value. Unfortunately right must be defined by the context. This means that a deep understanding of collaborative relationships must underpin any successful effort. This paper will focus on lessons from the field drawn from over 20 years experience in university/industry, industry/industry and consortia collaborative activities.
