Engineers have a distinct and important role to play in delivering sustainable development. They are able to conceive, design, operate and implement technological solutions that can contribute to a more sustainable future. However, the challenge of sustainable development transcends traditional engineering approaches and skills and requires a multidisciplinary approach. This paper discusses the ways in which engineers can contribute to sustainable development, in collaboration with other disciplines, including scientists, social scientists, economists and philosophers. Several case studies and projects will be presented to illustrate the approach.
